Up to 10,000 New Yorkers Lose Electric Power

NEW YORK, June 27, 2001 (Reuters) - Consolidated Edison Inc said Wednesday about 3,500 of its customers went without service in Brooklyn, New York, because of transmission facility problems. Michael Clendenin, a spokesman for Con Ed said there were originally about 10,000 customers without power because of a feeder problem at about 6:30 pm EDT. Wednesday was the hottest day of the year with temperatures near 93 degrees F in the city. By about 7:30 pm, most of the customers' service had been turned back on, he said.

Con Ed asked customers in the East New York area to turn off all non-essential devices including airconditioners. Con Ed said the feeder problems did not impact any other area in the city. Con Ed has more than 3 million customers in New York City and Westchester.
